Date: Tuesday, August 29, 2023, 1:00 p.m. - 4:30 p.m.
Place: Main Auditorium, 2F, Education and Research Building, Saitama Medical University International Medical Center,
Target: Doctors, medical staff, and students
Lecturer: Prof. Yoshiyuki Nezu
Assistant lecturer: Facilitator from the Nursing Department

Caregiving technique training was held by Prof. Yoshiyuki Nezu, chairman, Saitama Medical University Nursing and Care Technology Project Promotion Committee.

Doctors, physical therapists, occupational therapists, and students from the Saitama Medical University Group all gathered to receive training in caregiving techniques from Prof. Nezu.

The training and project is unique in that it brings together physicians, multidisciplinary medical staff, and students, with nurses who have mastered Prof. Nezu's caregiving techniques participating as adjunct instructors.

On the day of the training, Dr. Takeuchi, President of Saitama Medical University, and Dr. Saeki, Director of Saitama Medical University International Medical Center, actually joined the training and worked with medical staff and students to learn "eye-opening" caregiving techniques.

One of the founding philosophies of Saitama Medical University, "Fostering an academic culture of teacher-student collaboration," was exactly realized, and it was an inspiring training suitable for the "Saitama Medical University Nursing and Care Technology Project Promotion Committee," which aims to contribute to society as one, transcending occupations.

The training was covered by the Asahi Shimbun newspaper, and we expect that the training will be introduced later in the Asahi Shimbun newspaper.

I would like to express my sincere gratitude to Prof. Nezu for laying the foundation for the Saitama Medical University Group to contribute to society as one, transcending occupations and positions.

Here are some of the words we have received from them.

■President Tsutomu Takeuchi
It was a very valuable and wonderful experience for me to attend Prof. Nezu's lecture and to participate in the actual training and guidance. I am grateful that I was able to practice the true teacher-student relationship with the students and the doctors at the International Medical Center. I would like to thank Prof. Nezu and everyone for their efforts.

■Mitsuyo Muto, General Nursing Director
Thank you very much for the training. It was great to see Prof. Nezu's smile from the beginning to the end of the training, even though he was taking painkillers during the training. I and other staffs of Saitama Medical Group Nursing Department took care of him, so it was the best that we could express our gratitude to him even a little. We, too, thank Prof. Nezu for his energy. Please convey our best regards.

■Professor Nemoto Manabu, Department of Emergency Medicine, Saitama Medical University International Medical Center
I would like to thank you for giving me a wonderful and enjoyable time.
I have studied kendo since I was a child. Kendo is also very important to have a good center of gravity, and if your center of gravity is strong, your torso will not collapse. Also, I ride a motorcycle, and when I handle a motorcycle weighing about 250 kg, the important thing is not to use force, but to move it without losing the center of gravity. Therefore, I was able to easily accept Prof. Nesu's instruction. Since I was able to actually move my body and experience it this time, I believe that I will be able to provide safe and secure intervention to those who need some kind of assistance in the future. I would like to use this training as an opportunity to build with the nurses a method of assistance that can be used in the intensive care unit.
Thank you very much for giving us this opportunity even though Prof. Nezu was not feeling well. I hope that Prof. Nezu will be able to spend his time as himself.

■Toshihiro Muramatsu, Director and Specially Appointed Professor, Center for Preventive Medicine, Saitama Medical University Hospital
I first met Prof. Nezu when he visited the cardiology outpatient department of the Saitama Medical University International Medical Center. I was impressed from the beginning by his earnest attitude in spite of his great fame. Needless to say, Prof. Nezu's achievements are numerous, but I believe that the spread of nursing care technology that does not burden the back is truly the culmination of his work and the fruit of his dedicated efforts.
I was very moved by his lecture the other day, as it was a lecture from his soul. At the same time, I was moved by his passionate speech, and I felt again that we must convey his passion to others. Especially, his guidance to me became my greatest treasure. He is now in the midst of his battle with illness, but I hope that he will be at ease and devote himself to this work with the one team of Saitama Medical University.

■ Osamu Okuma, Physical Therapist, Director of Rehabilitation Department, Saitama Medical Center
Thank you very much for allowing me to attend this very valuable lecture.
I was fortunate to have many opportunities to receive direct demonstrations from Prof. Nezu in this lecture. When I actually experienced it, I was able to experience the strange sensation of my body moving naturally, without any effort or pain at all, even from the patient's point of view. I was also really surprised that I was able to provide assistance without any burden to myself after just a few practical exercises with other participants.
There are several methods of unburdened assistance in the theories and techniques of physical therapy, and various methods have been adopted in the field of nursing care as well. However, compared to these techniques, Prof. Nezu's nursing care technique has the advantage of being "simple and anyone can do it. I was able to experience that it is reassuring for families of patients who do not have specialized knowledge and for many people involved in the medical and welfare fields.
I was very impressed and inspired by Prof. Nezu's sense and effort in developing these techniques on his own, his kindness in using his own painful experiences for the happiness of others, and the depth of SHORINJI KEMPO. We are planning to hold another lecture at our rehabilitation department in the future. I would like to share this "mysterious and enjoyable experience" with other staff members, and would like to promote it as one of the options to relate to patients in clinical practice.
Finally, I would like to express my sincere gratitude for his positive and all-out guidance in the lectures.
